Odense Denmark
Odense is the capital city of Funen, which is one of Denmark’s main islands. The city is labelled “the Garden of Denmark” due to the numerous well maintained fields. Today Odense is home to over 185,000 inhabitants and is one of Denmark’s most industrious centres, with Denmark’s biggest shipyard situated here.
Back in the middle ages, Odense was a pilgrimage site, but gained political stature in the sixteenth century, and became the meeting place for many parliaments. Museums are popular in Odense; Jernebanemuseet is a railway museum that displays the growth of railways from the nineteenth century up to the present day.
Also take a trip to Hans Christian Andersen’s Hus; this is a museum that houses his works and personal belongings. In the summer his plays are performed in the gardens. If the weather permits then go to the open air funen Village, a museum that portrays houses, buildings and lifestyles as they were in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Egeskov Castle is one of Europe’s most impressive castles and stands on oak stilts in the centre of a lake. In summer, the streets of Odense are buzzing with art, music and theatre performances at various squares and piazzas. Odense has a temperate maritime climate with pleasant summers and cold winters.
