Toronto Information :
Toronto was origionally a military fort and was renowned for its natural harbour. It quickly grew as
a trading and manufacturing city. The railways connected Toronto to the huge forests and mineral
resources of northern Ontario, and made Toronto the export centre for Canadian manufacturing.
Downtown became home to massive buildings, the highest being the CIBC building which was
originally the tallest building in the British Commonwealth. Post World War II attracted immigrants
from all over the world, and the city expanded past its boundaries to become the Greater Toronto
Area we know today. Toronto added the subway system to speed commuters across the city. To
the north, in North York, Highway 401 was built with 16 lanes of traffic to aid cross-town traffic.
Toronto has the second-highest proportion of immigrants in the world (over half were born
outside Canada). Toronto, recently formed from five municipalities, is Canada's biggest city with a
population of 4.3 million. It is the capital of the province of Ontario. "Toronto" is the Huron Indian
word that translates to "place of meeting". Toronto is the head office of Canada, the financial
centre of the country, home of the second largest stock exchange in North America, and has the
country's busiest airport. Toronto is also home to the world's tallest building, the CN Tower.
Residents have plenty to do here! The city has lots of major league sports with teams such as the
Blue Jays, Leafs, Raptors, and Argonauts. The city has over 5,000 restaurants, bars and nightlife to
match. Yonge Street, the main public road, is the longest street in the world (1,800 km long). You
can also head underground for shopping in the world's biggest underground city, which is
connected to train stations and subways stations. At any one time, there are about 40 productions
playing, such as Broadway musicals, classical concerts, ballet and opera.
