Isle aux Coudres Information :
Isle aux Coudres is an island that sits on the Saint Lawrence River in the Charlevoix region of
Quebec. In the French language, “Coudriers” translates to “nut tree.” As there were several nut-
bearing trees on this island, Jacques Cartier named it this in 1535. The length of the island is 11 km
and the width of the island is 3 km. It is thought that this island was created when material was
lifted due to the impact of a meteor in the Charlevoix Region. On the North shore of the River,
there is a free ferry service that travels from Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive to this place. This island is a
favourite haunt for cyclists, and is reputed for tourist accommodation, historical sites and crafts
people. Throughout the island there are interpretation panels that explain the various cultural and
natural aspects of the island. These enable the tourists to know more about this stretch of land
that has been surrounded by water.
